Day 3
Day 3: Thursday, March 20, 2025
Breakfast is waiting for you this morning at the hotel before checking out and departing today for Charleston, SC!
Our first stop is at Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark near Charleston. The plantation, dating back to 1741, is renowned for its meticulously maintained formal gardens—the oldest in the United States. Visiting in the spring is a breathtaking experience as the historic gardens come to life with vibrant colors. See how the plantation bursts with azaleas, camellias, and magnolias in full bloom, creating a stunning contrast against the backdrop of the Spanish moss hanging from the live oaks. The mild spring weather makes it an ideal time to stroll through the meticulously designed terraces, reflecting pools, and alleys. With the scent of blossoms in the air, spring at Middleton Place offers a serene and picturesque glimpse into the beauty of the Lowcountry. The Middleton Place House Museum offers insights into the life of the Middleton family, influential figures in American history. The museum displays original furnishings, artifacts, and portraits that tell the story of the family’s role in colonial America, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War. Explore the stable yards, where historical interpreters demonstrate the daily activities of a working plantation, including blacksmithing, weaving, and farming. You’ll find the plantation’s grounds also feature scenic views of the Ashley River as you meander through the walking paths amongst the live oak groves draped in Spanish moss.
This afternoon we check into our Charleston hotel for a three-night stay. Have a bit of time to settle in and freshen up before departing for a Charleston Dinner Cruise on the Spirit of Carolina. This is one of the best ways to experience Charleston’s scenic harbor. As you glide along the water, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of historic landmarks, the Ravenel Bridge, and the city skyline at sunset. The cruise features a multi-course dinner, prepared on board using fresh, local ingredients, accompanied by live entertainment and exceptional service. What a great way to end your first day in Charleston!
Day 4
Day 4: Friday, March 21, 2025
Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel before heading out for a day full of Charleston charm! First off, Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens. Established in 1681, Boone Hall is one of America’s oldest working plantations, known for its rich agricultural heritage. The plantation has been continuously producing crops for over three centuries, and its historic mansion and iconic Avenue of Oaks stand as enduring symbols of the South’s cultural and architectural legacy. Today you’ll be offered a captivating glimpse into Southern history and beauty as you stroll through the lush grounds with the fragrant scent of azaleas and camellias. You’ll find the Avenue of Oaks draped in Spanish moss creating a grand entrance to the estate. In 1743, Major John Boone’s son planted live oak trees arranging them in two evenly spaced rows. It took two centuries for the massive, moss-draped branches to meet overhead forming today’s natural corridor and a view that NBC Daytime says is “a must see stop on any trip to Charleson, SC!” You will soon see that the well-preserved mansion is the centerpiece of the plantation. Built in 1936, it reflects the grandeur of Southern Colonial Revival architecture and was designed to capture the elegance of the old south. As you approach you are greeted by its stately columns and expansive porches and inside you’ll find beautiful furnished rooms with period antiques, original artwork and a glance into the lifestyle of a bygone era.
We are off for an immersive and personalized experience of the city’s rich history, culture, and architecture with a local step-on guide. They will lead us through Charleston’s most iconic sites while providing us with engaging commentary and insights.
Enjoy lunch on your own this afternoon and take some time to explore the bustling Market and Meeting Streets. These historic streets are the heart of downtown Charleston, offering a delightful mix of Southern charm and vibrant energy. Market Street is home to the famous Charleston City Market, where you can browse local crafts, artisanal goods, and sweetgrass baskets made by skilled Gullah artisans. Just around the corner, Meeting Street offers a variety of boutique shops, galleries, and cafes, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Whether you’re shopping for unique souvenirs or just want some wonderful local foods, these streets provide a true taste of Charleston’s rich culture and hospitality.
This evening’s dinner at Hyman’s Seafood is a chance to savor the flavors of the coast, connect with local history, and create memories that will linger long after you leave. Hyman’s Seafood traces its roots back to 1890, when Aaron Hyman first opened a wholesale dry goods store in Charleston. The business was passed down through generations of the Hyman family, and in 1986, it transitioned from a wholesale dry goods business to a seafood restaurant under the leadership of Eli Hyman and his brother, Aaron Hyman. Over the years, Hyman’s Seafood has become a staple of Charleston’s dining scene, known for its commitment to quality and service. The restaurant has received numerous accolades and has been frequented by celebrities, politicians, and food enthusiasts from around the world. Despite its fame, it remains a family-run business with a strong focus on community and customer satisfaction. It’s a Trailways Travelers favorite each time we visit!
This evening, we unveil Charleston’s secrets on The Ghost of Liberty Tour! Experience a captivating walking journey through the cobblestone streets and historic squares, where legends whisper and secrets linger. Meet your knowledgeable guide, a master storyteller, who will lead you through the city’s rich history and darkest corners. Some of the sites to be visited are the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, St. Philip’s Church, the Battery and White Point Garden, and Circular Congregational Church, which houses one of the oldest graveyards in the city. This tour is not really about scares; it’s a way to learn about the deep history of Charleston from a unique perspective with a mix of historical facts, folklore and maybe a ghostly encounter!
Day 5
Day 5: Saturday, March 22, 2025
Fuel up on breakfast at the hotel this morning – it’s a big ‘military’ type of exploration day! We begin with a visit to The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, a prestigious institution with a rich history and commitment to developing future leaders. Founded in 1842, this historic military college is renowned for its rigorous academic programs and its strong emphasis on character development, discipline, and leadership. Situated on a picturesque campus in downtown Charleston, The Citadel is distinguished by its iconic Gothic Revival architecture and beautiful parade grounds. We attend the Citadel Corps Review, a traditional military ceremony that provides a fascinating glimpse into the rigorous training and disciplined lifestyle of the cadets. Here you will see cadets perform formal drills and maneuvers showcasing a display of precision, discipline, and the strong traditions upheld by the college. During the Parade and Drill, cadets show their marching skills and attention to detail. The review often includes performances by the college’s regimental band and color guard. The precision of the movements and disciplined formation are extremely impressive and reflect the high standards of The Citadel. The Jeep Parade features a procession of miliary vehicles, including Jeeps adorned with flags and other patriotic symbols combining the historic charm of The Citadel with fun and community spirit while paying tribute to the military history and heritage of The Citadel and the United States Armed Forces. We take time for lunch, on our own, in downtown Charleston once more before departing for more exploration.
This afternoon takes us to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. This must-see attraction offers a comprehensive and educational experience as it is home to several historic naval vessels and exhibits that highlight the history and contributions of the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. Explore the WWII era aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, the centerpiece of the museum. While exploring the vast decks and interior spaces you can also see exhibits relating to naval aviation and what life is like aboard the vessel with interactive displays and multimedia presentations. Tour the destroyer USS Laffey, a post WWII destroyer known for its service during the Korean War. Walk through the ship, explore the bridge, engine rooms, and living quarters. Exhibits on board provide insight into the ship’s role in naval operations and the challenges its crew faced. The USS Clamagore is a Cold War era submarine. Here you can tour the cramped living quarters and view the technology used during its service. It will shed some light into the life of submariners and the operational capabilities of the vessel. Patriots Point Museum Building features artifacts and exhibits related to naval history including uniforms, weapons, and personal stories of sailors. There is also an exhibit dedicated to the Vietnam War offering a detailed look at the conflict with photographs, memorabilia and interactive displays. The Medal of Honor Museum honors recipients of the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded for valor. Displays include personal stories and medals awarded to heroes from various conflicts. We are sure that you will find this to be an engaging experience this afternoon while exploring the historic naval vessels and the museums telling about maritime history and honoring military heroes.
We end our day with an included dinner at the Oyster House Seafood Restaurant, known for its fresh, locally sourced seafood. The charming, coastal-inspired ambiance with nautical décor and a relaxed atmosphere is the perfect way to bid a fond farewell to Charleston as tomorrow we begin our jaunt to Savannah.
Day 6
Day 6: Sunday, March 23, 2025
Enjoy one last hotel breakfast in Charleston before checking out and departing this morning. As we begin our way to Savannah, we have a special stop to visit one of the oldest living things in our nation – the Angel Oak Tree! This awe-inspiring tree stands approximately 65 feet tall and has a canopy that stretches over 89 feet wide, providing a majestic and shaded area beneath its sprawling branches. It is estimated to be around 400 to 500 years old, making it a living witness to centuries of history. Some estimates suggest it could be as old as 1,500 years, though this is less commonly accepted. The tree boasts a trunk circumference of about 28 feet, and its longest limb measures over 89 feet from tip to tip, showcasing its impressive size and grandeur. While it’s a walk from where the motorcoach can park, we guarantee it is a highlight not to be missed. Please do follow their guidelines to ensure the continued protection of this beautiful live oak.
Then it is off to enjoy lunch on the waterfront in Beaufort, SC, before continuing to Savannah, GA. With stunning views of the water and historic charm, the waterfront offers a range of dining options featuring fresh seafood and Southern cuisine, making it a perfect stop to relax and savor the local flavors. May we suggest perhaps enjoying some “Sweetwater shrimp” for lunch? Sweetwater shrimp are a local variety caught in the areas’ waters where Sweetwater grasses grow making the shrimp known for their sweet, delicate flavor. If you remember, you certainly saw or perhaps even purchased a basket while in Charleston made from Sweetwater grass.
This afternoon we arrive in Savannah, GA where we will check into our hotel for a two-night stay. Dinner this evening is at Paula Deen’s flagship restaurant, The Lady & Sons. This restaurant got its humble beginnings back in June 1989 when Paula started The Bag Lady out of her home creating ‘bag lunches’. After her divorce and struggling to support her family, Deen sought a way to make ends meet. She began preparing and selling sandwiches and other homemade meals to local businesses and offices. The positive response to her cooking eventually led to the opening of her restaurant, The Lady & Sons, and the start of her career as a renowned chef and television personality.
The remainder of the evening is free, on your own, to do as you wish.
