We will explore the meticulously preserved rooms filled with priceless art collections, antique furnishings, and lavish décor giving us a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of one of America’s wealthiest families.
Lunch is once again on your own in downtown Tarrytown today before embarking on another afternoon outing.
Considered one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the United States is Lyndhurst, a magnificent Gothic Revival mansion. Its picturesque setting along the Hudson River, combined with its opulent interiors and meticulously landscaped grounds, make it a prime example of the romantic and extravagant estates built during the Gilded Age. Originally built in 1838, this historic estate underwent a transformation in the mid-19th century under the ownership of railroad magnate Jay Gould. His ownership of the estate during the late 19th century contributed to its prominence as a symbol of wealth and power during that era. Now it offers visitors a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of America’s elite from that time.
Then it’s off for a bit of maritime history and local lore as we visit the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse, perched along the scenic shore of the Hudson River. Dating back to the 19th century, this historic landmark served as a guiding light for ships navigating the river’s treacherous waters. We learn about its storied past as we admire its picturesque silhouette.
We then venture off for an early group dinner at the Tarry Tavern, the perfect spot for a cozy meal after exploring today and before we check out The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. This spectacular fall event features over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins to illuminate the night transforming the historic Van Cortlandt Manor into a pumpkin wonderland! This was a seasonal residence, just one of a portfolio of homes the Vanderbilts owned in New York City, Bar Harbor, Newport, and the Adirondacks. The house designed for Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt by McKim, Mead, & White is a masterpiece of American architecture. Though modest compared to the grand houses of Vanderbilt’s siblings, the Hyde Park interiors spared no expense and are richly appointed with exotic wood paneling, imported marble, lush velvets, French tapestries, and, as was the custom, antique building components salvaged from the great houses of Europe.
Lunch is definitely next in order and this one is one you’ll remember at the Culinary Institute of America’s Bocuse Restaurant. Enjoy a 3-course lunch banquet at this sleek and strikingly contemporary French restaurant named for the most famous chef in France, Paul Bocuse. With an exceptional French wine list and innovative cocktail program, The Bocuse Restaurant is a unique and exciting world class dining experience. After lunch, take in the Culinary Institute of America Experience with a student that will walk us through the physiology of taste, have a Q & A session with current students and then a short tour.
Time to board the motorcoach for our next destination today, Val-Kil, the historic home of Eleanor Roosevelt. Get a glimpse into the life and legacy of one of America’s most influential First Ladies. Nestled in the serene landscapes of Hyde Park, New York, this humble cottage served as a retreat and haven for Eleanor, where she entertained guests, pursued her passions, and championed social justice causes. Our guided tour should provide you with a deeper understanding of her enduring influence and enduring commitment to creating positive change in the world.
Providing a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to the locals, the Walkway Over the Hudson stands as a breathtaking testament to both engineering marvel and natural beauty. Spanning the Hudson River, this historic pedestrian bridge connects the towns of Poughkeepsie and Highland, offering a unique vantage point to take in panoramic views of the majestic river and surrounding landscapes. Originally a railway bridge, it has been transformed into the world’s longest elevated pedestrian park, attracting millions of visitors each year. Here we will have a guided group tour with stories about the past, present, and future of the Walkway.
After such a full day we are certain to have worked up an appetite. Tonight’s dinner will be at a landmark dining establishment that has been around since 1981 – Palace Diner. Step into the nostalgic ambiance of a bygone era, complete with retro décor and friendly service for a meal to enjoy with your fellow travelers. After, we return to the hotel for the remainder of the evening.

We will say good-bye to our guide after an insightful day learning of the Amish culture as we make our way to Oregon, Ohio to overnight.
Dinner this evening will be at a place that has gained world-wide fame when M*A*S*H character Corporal Maxwell Klinger, played by Jamie Farr, a Toledo, OH native made mention of this restaurant in six episodes of the show. Tony Packo’s Café has been perfecting their line of hot dogs, pickles, chili, and other food items since 1932. Born in 1908 to Hungarian immigrants, Tony Packo was a native of Toledo’s East Side. In 1932 he and his wife, Rose, received a $100 loan to open a sandwich and ice cream shop during the hardest of times in the Great Depression. This is where his signature sandwich – the Hungarian Hot Dog – became an instant hit. Packo’s hot dog is made with Hungarian Kolbasz sausage and is served sliced in half because they are so large.
