Day 1

Day 1: Tuesday, April 22, 2025
Get ready for an unforgettable adventure as you depart from the available departure location of your choice aboard a comfortable Burlington Trailways motorcoach. Relax and enjoy the journey with our friendly host and skilled driver who will ensure your trip is smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenic ride as we make our way to Norfolk, Virginia, for the Virginia International Tattoo—an extraordinary display of military bands, precision drill teams, and international performers. We will make our usual rest & refresh breaks and one for lunch before arriving at our overnight accommodations at the Drury Plaza Indianapolis Carmel. Always a favorite of our travelers you may partake in the evening Kickback Reception which includes a variety of foods and a selection of drinks including some wines, beers, and cocktails. If you wish to have more of a sit-down dinner this evening, you may choose to dine at one of the restaurants located right next to the hotel.

Day 2

Day 2: Wednesday, April 23, 2025
Your hot Drury breakfast buffet is awaiting you this morning before we check out and continue our journey. Board the motorcoach and settle in as we set out for more travel today with rest and refresh breaks as needed and a tour of the “Secret Bunker” located at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. It sounds like the stuff of movies, but it is true! In 1958 during the Cold War, at the height of nuclear panic across the US, Project Greek Island was underway at The Greenbrier in a quiet little community. At the behest of the Eisenhower Administration, a US Government Relocation Facility was being built beneath what the public thought was simply an addition to the existing hotel. The addition, the West Virginia wing, was actually a cover-up. In reality, a concrete-encased fallout shelter was being buried 720 feet underground. It was intended to withstand an indirect nuclear attack and house all the members of Congress as well as a support staff of hundreds. Take a peek at what was once one of the best-kept secrets until it was exposed in 1992 by the Washington Post.
Enjoy an included group dinner this evening where you can all discuss what you just learned about the underground bunker and ponder what else may be in existence that no one knows about. We arrive in Lexington, Virginia to check into our hotel for the remainder of the evening.

Day 3

Day 3: Thursday, April 24, 2025
Fuel up for a great day with breakfast at the hotel this morning before we depart with our final destination being Norfolk, VA. As we travel along our adventures begin with a guided trolley tour of Richmond, VA, a city steeped in rich American history and culture. Travel along the cobblestone streets past grand historic homes and iconic landmarks such as the Virginia State Capitol and Monument Avenue as our guide brings to life the stories from 400 years of history that shaped this remarkable city.
Next, we travel to Norfolk, VA, where you’ll settle in for a luxurious three-night stay at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. This stunning waterfront hotel provides the perfect blend of comfort and modern elegance, offering breathtaking views of the harbor. After checking in and freshening up, get ready to indulge in a truly memorable experience – the Norfolk Signature Dinner Cruise on the serene Elizabeth River for an enjoyable casual evening out. Savor a delicious, chef-prepared buffet while soaking in the panoramic views of the Norfolk skyline and architecture plus famed city landmarks such as the Navy’s mighty Atlantic Fleet. With a fully-stocked bar and lively music from the DJ you are sure to enjoy this cruise of the harbor and surrounding waterways as the sun sets over the water.

Day 4

Day 4: Friday, April 25, 2025
Start your morning off right with a great breakfast at the hotel before departing for a very full day!
We begin by stepping into history at the MacArthur Memorial, a remarkable tribute to General Douglas MacArthur and the men and women who served with him during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Nestled in downtown Norfolk this captivating museum and research center invites visitors on a journey through pivotal moments in American military history.
Explore nine galleries filled with authentic artifacts, interactive exhibits, and historic photographs that bring General MacArthur’s life and legacy to life. From his early career to his legendary leadership during World War II and his role in post-war Japan, each exhibit offers a powerful glimpse into the life of one of America’s most influential military figures.
The memorial itself is also the final resting place of General MacArthur and his wife, Jean, making it a place of reverence and reflection. Wander through the peaceful Rotunda, where the MacArthur’s’ tombs are set in a solemn and awe-inspiring atmosphere.
Next, step into the serene beauty of the Hermitage Museum & Gardens, a hidden gem of Norfolk. This historic estate is home to a world-class collection of art, from ancient artifacts to contemporary works. Wander through the lush, waterfront gardens, each with its own distinct charm, and take in the tranquil surroundings as you explore the mansion’s impressive galleries. Located within minutes of the largest U.S. naval base, the world’s busiest coal pier, and a major East Coast container port, it is bordered on three sides by the Lafayette River, a tributary of the tidal estuary that threads through Hampton Roads. The home was built by William and Florence Sloane, wealthy New Yorkers who came to Hampton Roads in 1893 to operate textile mills. Named “Hermitage,” the home was constructed in 1908 as a five-room summer home, but soon became the Sloanes’ principal residence. Under Florence’s active direction, the Arts and Crafts style house was reoriented and expanded to its final forty-two rooms by 1936.
It’s off to the Hullabaloo Festival and the Virginia International Tattoo. Enjoy an afternoon filled with live music, delicious food, interactive exhibits and many performances at the Hullabaloo Festival. It sets the stage perfectly for an unforgettable evening at the Tattoo, a spectacle like no other! From the thunderous sounds of bagpipes and drums to the mesmerizing choreography of military bands and dancers, this powerful performance is a tribute to courage and camaraderie. With dazzling lights, music, and a cast of hundreds, the Tattoo leaves you inspired by the spirit of international friendship and the shared values of service and sacrifice. Established in 1997, this is a signature event of the Virginia Arts Festival. Every year the Tattoo welcomes over 800 performers from all over the world in a display of military bands, drill teams, massed pipes and drums, Celtic dancers, choirs and more. It is the largest tattoo in the US, drawing an international audience each year and has been listed as one of the American Bus Association’s Top 100 North American Events.

Day 5: Saturday, April 26, 2025

We begin with a visit to the vibrant Parade of Nations at the Norfolk NATO Festival, a celebration of international unity and cultural diversity. Held annually, this festival features representatives from NATO’s 31 member nations, showcasing the traditions, music, and customs of their homelands. As the flags wave and the parade winds through the streets, you’ll experience a colorful display of global cultures right in the heart of Norfolk. This is the longest continuously running parade in Hampton Roads and the only parade in the USA honoring NATO. You will long remember the over 75 Parade Units with local and visiting high school bands, U.S. and International Military Bands and colorful floats representing each of the NATO Member Nations.
This afternoon we visit the Maritime Discovery Center which offers an engaging glimpse into the city’s deep connection with the sea. As a key port city with a proud naval tradition, Norfolk has long been a hub of maritime activity, and this center captures the spirit of exploration, commerce, and defense that has shaped the region. Explore a wealth of exhibits that chronicle Norfolk’s maritime history, from its early colonial days to its role as home to the world’s largest naval base. Learn about the brave sailors, shipbuilders, and explorers who charted these waters and helped make Norfolk a cornerstone of American naval power. One of the center’s highlights is its collection of historic ship models, offering intricate details of vessels from different eras. You’ll also encounter interactive displays that bring the science of sailing and navigation to life, perfect for visitors of all ages. From the mechanics of old-fashioned sailing ships to the technology behind modern naval vessels, the center combines history and innovation.
Outside, take a moment to enjoy the waterfront views that stretch out across the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads harbor, offering a real-time look at the busy maritime traffic that has defined the city for centuries.
Dinner this evening is included at a local favorite restaurant before your great ending to the evening.
Experience the beauty of Norfolk from the water with a magical sunset cruise aboard the American Rover, a majestic, three-masted tall ship that sails along the picturesque Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor. As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, you’ll glide across the calm waters, taking in breathtaking views of the city’s skyline, historic waterfront, and the bustling activity of the world’s largest naval base. Relax on deck as the sails catch the evening breeze, or lend a hand as part of the crew to help raise the sails. With live music setting the perfect mood and the peaceful ambiance of the open water, this unforgettable cruise offers a one-of-a-kind perspective on Norfolk’s maritime charm.

Day 6

Day 6: Sunday, April 27, 2025
Begin today with a hearty breakfast at the hotel, fueling up with fresh coffee and delicious bites before checking out and setting off for more explorations.
We begin with time at the Norfolk Botanical Garden, a feast for the senses as the gardens burst into vibrant spring bloom. As one of the most beautiful times of the year, April brings an explosion of color with thousands of azaleas, tulips, and dogwoods in full bloom, painting the landscape with rich hues of pink, red, and yellow. Stroll through the famous Rhododendron Glade, where the dazzling azaleas and rhododendrons create a canopy of floral beauty, or explore the Spring Garden, where tulips, daffodils, and cherry blossoms are at their peak. Spanning over 175 acres, this lush oasis invites you to explore a stunning array of themed gardens, from the serene Japanese Garden with its tranquil ponds and bridges, to the colorful, ever-changing displays of the Renaissance Court.
We bid farewell to Norfolk as we begin to make our way back to the Midwest. We stop along the way to visit the Stonewall Jackson House and Museum in Lexington, VA, the preserved former home of Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, offering you a glimpse into the life of one of the Civil War’s most famous figures. The modest brick home, where Jackson lived with his second wife, Mary Anna Morrison Jackson, from 1858 until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, has been carefully restored to reflect its 19th-century appearance. The museum features original and period furnishings, personal belongings of the Jackson family, and artifacts related to Jackson’s life and military career. Learn about his role as a professor at the Virginia Military Institute and his life as a husband and community member before he became a legendary military leader. The surrounding gardens offer a peaceful retreat, and the museum’s exhibits delve into both his personal life and his complex legacy.
Dinner this evening will be included at a local restaurant. We overnight this evening in Huntington, West Virginia.

Day 7

Day 7: Monday, April 28, 2025
This morning set your luggage out and have breakfast included at the hotel before we check out and continue on our way. Our first visit will be at the Kentucky Horse Park, the only park of its kind in the world. Set on more than 1,200 acres in the heart of Kentucky’s famous Bluegrass region, the park is the place to get close to horses! Wander through exhibits at the International Museum of the Horse, meet legendary thoroughbreds, and enjoy live demonstrations showcasing various breeds and riding disciplines. It is home to several former Derby winners and other celebrated racehorses. The park’s Hall of Champions showcases retired champions from the world of horse racing, including former Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes winners. See these legendary horses up close during daily presentations, where the horses are introduced, and their racing careers and accomplishments are highlighted. After taking in the sights, relax with lunch at your leisure at one of the park’s charming cafés. Choose from the Iron Works Café, where you can enjoy freshly made sandwiches, salads, and other light fare in a cozy indoor setting, or dine al fresco at the Paddock Café, offering a variety of seasonal dishes and snacks with views of the beautiful park grounds.
We continue on to Louisville and the Drury Inn where we will check in for a one-night stay before we depart for the Belle of Louisville Dinner Cruise. Step aboard an iconic steamboat that has been a beloved symbol of Louisville since 1914. Enjoy this historic vessel as you cruise along the scenic Ohio River, blending Southern hospitality with timeless riverboat elegance. Dinner this evening should include dishes like tender roast beef, fresh seafood, and classic sides. The evening is enhanced by live entertainment, often featuring a mix of local musicians and performers. Be sure to take in the stunning views of the city skyline and the picturesque riverbanks as you glide across the water. We return to the hotel for a great night of rest before our return home tomorrow.

Day 8

Day 8: Tuesday, April 29, 2025
Enjoy a hot Drury breakfast buffet this morning before setting out for your return home. Rest and refresh breaks and a stop for lunch will be made along the way. Sit back to visit with your fellow travelers and reminisce about the dynamic Hullabaloo at the Virginia International Tattoo that provided a thrilling display of music, dance, and military pageantry, the MacArthur Memorial Museum, and the different river cruises you took plus your time visiting the retired racehorses at the Kentucky Horse Park. What a full tour and an opportunity to make some new friends along the way.
