Day 1

Day 1: Thursday, August 15, 2024
Embark from the available departure location of your choice for an unforgettable journey through the Dakotas aboard our comfortable Burlington Trailways touring motorcoach, accompanied by your friendly host and skilled driver. We will stop along the way today for a lunch and rest and refresh breaks as needed. We end the evening at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Sioux City, Iowa for a fantastic stay. Enjoy a group dinner this evening before enjoying the many amenities provided here as well as the opportunity for some gaming action if you wish.

Day 2

Day 2: Friday, August 16, 2024
We enjoy an included breakfast this morning before departing. Settle into your seat and relax as we travel through the rolling landscapes, passing by quaint towns and expansive prairies. A visit to The World’s Only Corn Palace is a definite must on this adventure! Located in Mitchell, South Dakota, this iconic structure is adorned with intricate murals made entirely of corn and other grains, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of local artists. Each year, the exterior of the Corn Palace is transformed with new designs, celebrating the bounty of the harvest and the spirit of the Midwest. As we continue on our way we find ourselves in the Badlands Loop Drive with a stop at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. The Badlands Loop Drive winds its way through the mesmerizing landscapes of Badlands National Park in South Dakota. This scenic route offers breathtaking views of dramatic rock formations, rugged canyons, and expansive prairies, providing ample opportunities for photography and wildlife spotting.
We continue with a stop at the famous Wall Drug, another icon of the region. This legendary roadside attraction in Wall, South Dakota, has been captivating travelers since 1931 with its quirky charm and Western hospitality. What began as a small pharmacy has evolved into a sprawling complex offering everything from free ice water to homemade donuts, attracting visitors from around the world. It’s then just a short drive to our hotel to check in before departing for the Mount Rushmore Evening Lighting Ceremony with an included dinner overlooking Mount Rushmore as you dine. It’s breathtaking to see the faces of the presidents carved into the granite mountainside illuminated creating a powerful and patriotic atmosphere with a moving tribute to American history and democracy. We return to our hotel immediately following the lighting ceremony for a great night of rest – there’s more adventure awaiting you tomorrow!

Day 3

Day 3: Saturday, August 17, 2024
Rise and shine, it’s time for breakfast before heading out for a full day of South Dakota fun! We make a return to Mount Rushmore for another viewing of the great carving. It truly has a totally different appearance with the faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln emerging from the granite bathed in the warm sunshine! Take some time to visit the Sculptor’s Studio in the Information Center, walk beneath the proud, waving colors of 56 state and territory flags on your way to the Grand view Terrace and Presidential Trail, and then explore the onsite bookstore, visit the museum, and gift shop too!
Our next stop is the Crazy Horse Memorial, a monumental work in progress dedicated to honoring the culture, heritage, and contributions of Native American tribes. Carved into Thunderhead Mountain, it depicts the legendary Lakota leader Crazy Horse mounted on his steed, aiming to be the largest sculpture in the world once completed. Initiated by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski in 1948, the memorial serves as a symbol of perseverance and unity, inviting visitors to learn about Native American history and the ongoing efforts to preserve indigenous cultures. Talk about a “work in progress”! Be sure to have lunch here today, on your own. You may want it to be on the lighter side as we have a chuckwagon steak dinner in store for you this evening!
Nestled in the beautiful Black Hills, we visit Custer State Park, spanning over 71,000 acres it is renowned for its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. Home of one of the largest free-roaming buffalo herds in the world, as well as elk, deer, and prairie dogs, Custer State Park provides an immersive experience in the heart of the American wilderness. It is also home to a unique population of wild donkeys, often referred to as burros. These charming creatures roam freely throughout the park, delighting visitors with their curious and friendly nature. Descendants of the burros brought to the area by early settlers, they have become a beloved symbol of the park’s wild and untamed spirit. While here, we embark on a thrilling Jeep safari ride led by knowledgeable guides offering an up-close encounter with the park’s diverse wildlife and landscapes. We end in a serene setting against the backdrop of the Black Hills for a dining adventure that captures the spirit of the Old West. We will gather around campfires as skilled cooks prepare hearty meals, including juicy steaks grilled to perfection. Live entertainment adds to the ambiance, with cowboy songs and stories echoing through the evening air. It’s the perfect ending to a most-perfect day! Time to hit the hay for what is in store for you tomorrow!

Day 4

Day 4: Sunday, August 18, 2024
Up and at ‘em cowboy – grab breakfast and board the coach, we’re off to Deadwood and to see old Wild Bill Hickock for a guided tour! Deadwood is a historic mining town with a colorful past. Famous for its association with Wild West legends like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, Deadwood offers visitors a glimpse into the area’s storied history through its preserved architecture, lively saloons, and intriguing museums. Its unique charm and Old West ambiance make it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. We also will be visiting Tatanka, a captivating attraction dedicated to honoring the heritage and history of the Lakota Sioux people. Founded by actor and activist Kevin Costner, Tatanka offers visitors a compelling journey into the world of the Plains Indians, particularly focusing on the story of the buffalo and its significance to Native American culture and survival. The centerpiece of the attraction is a larger-than-life bronze sculpture depicting a buffalo jump, a traditional hunting method used by indigenous peoples for centuries. Surrounding the sculpture are interpretive exhibits, native gardens, and a gift shop, providing insight into the rich cultural legacy of the Lakota Sioux. Tatanka stands as a poignant tribute to the resilience and spirit of the Plains Indians and not a stop to be missed. We will grab a boxed lunch from them and continue on our way into North Dakota today with a rest & refresh stop along the way.
Tonight, we check in for a 2-night stay at The Rough Riders Hotel, a historic gem named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt’s famed cavalry unit that exudes Old West charm and hospitality! Originally built in 1884, it has been lovingly restored to its former glory, offering guests a unique blend of rustic elegance and modern comforts. The hotel’s distinctive architecture, with its frontier-style facade and inviting verandas, evokes the spirit of the Wild West. Inside, guests are greeted by cozy rooms adorned with Western decor and modern amenities, ensuring a comfortable stay.
This evening is one we think you will always remember – the Medora Pitchfork Fondue and Medora Musical! The Pitchfork Steak Fondue is a beloved tradition, where guests gather around open-air grills to enjoy sizzling steaks cooked to perfection on pitchforks. Accompanied by an array of delicious sides and desserts, this outdoor feast captures the essence of cowboy cooking and camaraderie. After indulging in the steak fondue, we head to the nearby Burning Hills Amphitheatre for the Medora Musical, a high-energy stage production celebrating the spirit of the Old West through music, dance, and storytelling. With its talented cast, stunning scenery, and toe-tapping tunes, the Medora Musical transports you on a journey back in time, making it a must-see attraction for those visiting the charming town of Medora.
Since it’s a bit of a later night tonight, y’all will get to sleep in a bit tomorrow morning if you wish!

Day 5

Day 5: Monday, August 19, 2024
Awake refreshed and ready to roll as we begin our day with a historical brunch with Teddy Roosevelt (wink, wink) where the spirit of the Rough Rider himself comes to life. Hosted in a charming venue that evokes the elegance of the early 20th century, we will be transported back in time to dine in the company of one of America’s most iconic presidents. Enjoy a delectable brunch spread featuring hearty frontier fare, inspired by the flavors of Roosevelt’s era. Throughout the meal, Teddy Roosevelt regales us with tales of adventure, politics, and conservation, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life and legacy of this larger-than-life figure.
Now that we have met Teddy and learned more of his adventures and ideas on conservation we depart for a guided tour of Teddy Roosevelt National Park. Named in honor of the 26th President who found solace and inspiration in this area during his time as a rancher in the late 19th century, the park celebrates his commitment to preserving America’s natural treasures for future generations to continue enjoying. You will see the rugged beauty of the Badlands, with towering rock formations, colorful canyons and sweeping prairie landscapes. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife within the park including bison, elk, and those cute prairie dogs.
What’s that? The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame is beckoning us for a visit. This hall of fame celebrates the rich heritage and contributions of North Dakota’s cowboys, cowgirls, and ranching pioneers. Wander through the interactive exhibits, artifacts, and multimedia displays, while being immersed in the colorful history of the region’s ranching culture and Western way of life.
Enjoy a little ‘down time’ today before having a group dinner this evening at a favorite local restaurant and returning back to the hotel for our last night in Medora.

Day 6

Day 6: Tuesday, August 20, 2024
Pack your bags, have a hearty breakfast and head down to the motorcoach as we say farewell to Medora and make our way to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park for a tour. Located near Mandan, North Dakota, the park offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history and natural beauty. It is also home to the reconstructed Fort Abraham Lincoln, which served as a major military post in the late 1800’s and was once commanded by General George Custer. Here we will explore the fort’s restored buildings, including the Custer House, and learn about life on the frontier through the interpretive exhibits and guided tour.
We depart with a lunch rest and refresh stop along the way before making our way to Bismarck, the state capital of North Dakota. Here enjoy a State Capitol Building Tour as it stands as a majestic symbol of the state’s government and history. It was completed in 1934 and dominated the city skyline with its distinctive 19-story tower and grand façade. Inside you will be greeted by elegant marble interiors adorned with intricate murals, statues, and stained-glass depicting scenes from North Dakota’s past. Located near the capitol building we visit the Sakakawea Statue that pays homage to the legendary Shoshone woman wo played a vital role as a guide and interpreter for the Lewis and Clark expedition. This iconic bronze sculpture depicts her with her infant son, Jean Baptiste, strapped to her back symbolizing her courage and resilience during the expedition. We then journey through time, from the ancient landscapes of the region’s prehistoric past to the stories of its indigenous peoples, early settlers, and modern-day residents at The North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum. Highlights include exhibits on the state’s geological formations, Native American cultures, pioneer life, and contemporary issues facing North Dakotans.
Later we check into the Best Western Roosevelt Place in Bismarck for our overnight stay. Please note, this hotel does not offer luggage handling. Have some time to freshen up before departing for dinner this evening at the Olive Garden with your included $25 meal gift card.

Day 7

Day 7: Wednesday, August 21, 2024
Time to have breakfast at the hotel this morning before loading up our luggage and departing back into South Dakota as we begin our trek back home. We will take time for a rest and refresh break, and a lunch break before arriving in Pierre, the capital city of South Dakota situated along the banks of the Missouri River. Did you know that Pierre is one of the smallest state capitals in the US by population? We stop for a visit and tour of the South Dakota State Capitol building. This building, a neoclassical masterpiece, features stunning architecture and a fascinating history. Its imposing white granite facade, crowned by a grand dome, commands attention and admiration from all. We will also visit the Fighting Stallions Memorial, a tribute to the state’s law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty; the Flaming Fountain Memorial, a Veterans Memorial dedicated to South Dakotans who have fought for their country in time of war; and the World War II Memorial consisting of six bronze figures representing the branches of service in which South Dakotans served during WWII.
We overnight at a local hotel with an included group dinner this evening.

Day 8

Day 8: Thursday, August 22, 2024
Enjoy breakfast this morning before departing for another day of exploration on our return journey home. We begin with a stop at the Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center in Chamberlain, South Dakota. Nestled in the heart of South Dakota’s prairie lands, this renowned institution celebrates the rich history, artistry, and traditions of the Lakota Nation. Beyond its role as a repository of history, the museum also serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for future generations of Lakota youth. Through initiatives aimed at cultural revitalization and youth outreach, the Center strives to ensure that the spirit of the Lakota people continues to thrive for centuries to come. In every corner of this sacred space, the echoes of Lakota voices resonate, inviting all who enter to embark on a transformative journey of discovery, empathy, and reverence for the enduring legacy of the Lakota people.
As we continue our journey, we will find nestled along the banks of the Missouri River the sculpture “Dignity of Earth and Sky” standing as a majestic tribute to Native American culture and the natural beauty of the Great Plains. Rising proudly to a height of 50 feet, and crafted from stainless steel, the sculpture depicts a Lakota woman, her outstretched arms reaching towards the heavens as she gazes out over the vast expanse of the prairie landscape. “Dignity” serves as a powerful symbol of resilience and empowerment, embodying the strength and dignity of Native American women throughout history. Take the time to examine the intricate details of the woman’s regalia, from her flowing dress adorned with star quilts to the feathers that adorn her hair, pay homage to the rich cultural heritage of the Lakota people as you enjoy a boxed lunch here.
We continue on our way to explore the Sioux Falls Park Visitor Information Center. Situated on the banks of the Big Sioux River, the visitor center offers a prime vantage point for admiring the breathtaking cascades of Falls Park, where the river tumbles over ancient pink quartzite rock formations, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of rushing water and mist. The center also boasts a well-stocked gift shop, where visitors can peruse a curated selection of locally crafted souvenirs, artwork, and keepsakes to commemorate their visit to Sioux Falls. From handmade jewelry and pottery to regional gourmet treats, there’s something to suit every taste and budget. As you will find that the view here is absolutely stunning, we have chosen to have our farewell group dinner here this evening before checking into our local hotel for the rest of the night.

Day 9

Day 9: Friday, August 23, 2024
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before departing for the last leg of our journey back home today. We will stop for a rest and refresh break along the way and stop for an included lunch and tour today at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. It holds a special place in the hearts of many as a beloved symbol of enduring love and faith. Built in 1864 amidst the serene countryside of northeast Iowa, it has welcomed countless couples seeking to exchange vows in its timeless setting with warm, honey-colored walls and rustic wooden pews. Its stained-glass windows filter soft, golden light into the sacred space creating a sense of tranquility and reverence – a perfect spot to begin a lifetime together. Lunch today will be hot country ham, scalloped potatoes, a salad, roll and dessert with coffee or water.
We then return home with some fabulous memories of time at Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, the quaint community of Medora and so much more!
