Arrive in Galveston Island this morning where we’ll meet our local tour guide before setting out to explore Pier 21 and the Texas Seaport Museum, home of the 1877 tall ship Elissa. Explore the decks of this floating National Historic Landmark, which has also been designated one of America’s Treasures by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Walk Elissa’s decks and imagine the days when daring sailors challenged the world’s oceans. In the adjacent museum and theater, witness the story of Elissa’s dramatic rescue from the scrap yard and her meticulous restoration. Enjoy the Pier 21 Theatre and movie highlights of major events of the island including the 1900 storm that ravaged the island and also chronicles Galveston’s beloved pirate history.
Take time to have lunch, on your own, on Pier 21 – a waterfront entertainment and dining area located on Galveston’s historic harbor in the Strand Seaport area.
This afternoon, enjoy time at the Bryan Museum which presents a chronological history of Texas and the American West, with a special emphasis on the Spanish influences in the region. In addition to its permanent galleries, the museum also includes spaces for rotating special exhibits, a library and an archive. Bryan hopes that his collection will aid in the education of both the community and the five million visitors the island welcomes each year. There is a great diversity of experience in the American West and the mission of the Bryan Museum is to illuminate those compelling histories.
Get checked in to the full-service DoubleTree Hilton Beach Hotel, located in the heart of the island’s dining and entertainment district, overlooking sandy Gulf beaches. Your room includes a mini refrigerator, 42” flat screen HD TV, coffee maker, and Wi-Fi. Complimentary bicycles are available for transportation for some exploration on your own, and they also offer a shuttle service available all day.
Enjoy some time in your balcony room to unwind, unpack and freshen up before an included dinner at Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant. This well-known seafood restaurant was opened by S.G. Gaido in 1911, the same year air-conditioning was invented. With an unwavering commitment to serving the freshest Gulf seafood, Gaido’s popularity grew each decade, evolving into a cherished tradition for thousands of both locals and visitors. Today, they meticulously cook by that same credo, only the freshest seafood prepared by hand along with the very best service – which is why their famous island kitchen is truly a coastal classic!
Return to the hotel for the remainder of the evening, on your own.

A Texas-sized establishment, it is the perfect spot to unwind, ideally situated next to the Historic Strand District. The menu features an extensive selection of fresh fish daily, signature seafood combination platters, savory steak and chicken dishes and a variety of pasta offerings. Today, you will visit 20 of the rooms that depict the home life of a powerful Texan family. The Moody’s established one of the great American financial empires based on the cotton they grew as well as being in banking, ranching, insurance and hotels.
Enjoy lunch, on your own, and free time to meander around the historic downtown, including the Strand and Seaport. Once known as the “Wall Street of the Southwest” Galveston’s famed avenue, The Strand, anchors the historic downtown area. Gain the insight of being on the USS Cavalla, a WWII submarine that sank a Japanese aircraft carrier involved in the Pearl Harbor attack, or on the USS Stewart, the only Edsall-class destroyer escort preserved in the US.
Depart for the hotel and bid farewell to the local tour guide you have had each day. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening on your own.
