Day 5

Day 5: Monday, September 30, 2024
Rise and shine early today and grab a to go breakfast box as you board the motorcoach this morning. As the Durango & Silverton railroad will no longer accept groups to depart from Durango, we must make an early start to get to Silverton before the train arrives so that you may have an opportunity for lunch today. On our way we will stop for a rest break and photo opportunities at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Carved over millions of years, the canyon’s dark walls create a striking contrast against the rushing waters. Have time to capture these breathtaking views of the rugged canyon walls sculpted by the forces of nature and also make your way into the visitors center for a quick refresh break before departing.
As we leave and make our way to Silverton, we will drive the 25-mile stretch of The Million Dollar Highway which connects the community of Ouray to Silverton. This is a thrilling and unforgettable experience as this iconic stretch of road winds through the rugged peaks of the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado, offering breathtaking views and hairpin turns that will leave you in awe. They say this canyon-clinging stretch of spectacular roadway is called “The Million Dollar Highway” either because it cost so much to build, the amount of gold ore that remains in the roadway’s fill, or else perhaps for the figurative price for those amazing San Juan Mountain views!
We arrive in Silverton, hopefully before the train, to have lunch. We have made our best effort to ensure you a lunch location with a reservation for our group at the Lacey Rose Saloon. Our driver will drop us here to have lunch, on your own, and then as you finish to make your way to the train station with some time to visit some of the many shops along the way. It is an approximate 3-to-5-minute walk to the station from the Lacey Rose Saloon. The train departs at 2:45 sharp – please arrive by 2:00 pm to get your boarding pass and have time to get on the train and find your seat.
Embarking on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train from Silverton to Durango, Colorado, is like stepping back in time to the golden age of rail travel. As the historic steam locomotive chugs to life, you’re greeted with the rhythmic sounds of the engine and the billowing steam that fills the air. The train winds its way through the breathtaking San Juan Mountains, offering panoramic views of rugged peaks, cascading waterfalls, and lush forests. Along the journey, you’ll pass through narrow canyons and traverse high trestles, all while relishing the nostalgia of vintage rail cars and the camaraderie of fellow passengers. Arriving in Durango, you’ll have experienced not just a mode of transportation, but a journey through Colorado’s rich history and stunning natural beauty. Once departing the train, we will walk the two blocks to The Strater Hotel, standing as a timeless symbol of the Old West exuding historic charm and elegance. Your luggage should await you in your room which is adorned with beautiful, handcrafted woodwork, period wallpaper, and pieces from one of the largest collections of American Victorian walnut antiques used to decorate the guestrooms and the hotel itself. Dating back to 1887, this iconic landmark has welcomed travelers for over a century, offering a unique blend of Victorian opulence and Western hospitality. Dinner this evening is on your own in downtown Durango, but we do suggest that there are some fine options right within the hotel that offer live music and entertainment too. The world-famous Diamond Belle Saloon, the Mahogany Grille (reservations required), or The Office Spiritorium. The evening is yours to have dinner and explore Durango.

Day 6

Day 6: Tuesday, October 1, 2024
Up and at ‘em – have breakfast at the hotel this morning before checking out and setting out for another day of western adventure. We make our way to the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center which serves as the gateway to one of America’s most significant archaeological sites. Here you will be provided with essential information about the park’s history, archaeology, and conservation efforts. Plus, you can explore interactive exhibits, watch informative films, and speak with knowledgeable rangers who offer insights into the ancient Ancestral Puebloan culture that once thrived in the region. Beyond the Visitor Center, the highlight of Mesa Verde National Park is undoubtedly its breathtaking cliff dwellings. These remarkably preserved archaeological sites, including Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Spruce Tree House, offer a glimpse into the lives of the ancestral Pueblo people who inhabited the area over 700 years ago. You can embark on guided tours led by park rangers to explore these fascinating dwellings, marveling at the ingenious architecture built into the cliffsides and learning about the daily lives, customs, and eventual migration of these ancient inhabitants. We return to the Visitor Center for an included lunch in the Far View Terrace before we depart.
Sit back and relax this afternoon taking in the passing scenery as our driver takes us to Alamosa, Colorado for our overnight stay and an included group dinner at a local restaurant this evening.

Day 7

Day 7: Wednesday, October 2, 2024
Have breakfast at the hotel and then get settled in for a relaxing drive. We are off to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, a marvel of engineering and a haven for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. Spanning the dramatic chasm of the Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge Bridge is one of the highest suspension bridges in the world, offering breathtaking views of the rugged canyon below. You may walk across the bridge, if you choose, marveling at the sheer cliffs and rushing river far below. If you are REALLY adventurous, you could soar above the canyon on the Royal Gorge Zip Line or ride the Royal Rush Skycoaster! For those a little less adventurous perhaps you may like to take in a scenic gondola ride, check out the wildlife exhibit or maybe take a small hike on one of the many trails showcasing the area’s natural beauty. The Visitor Center has much to offer as well, and there is also the Plaza Theater which provides an educational film on the history of the gorge and bridge. Regardless of what you may choose to do, the Royal Gorge promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Colorado’s stunning landscape. While here, be sure to have some lunch before we depart.
As we bid farewell to the Royal Gorge, we set out for another great place to visit today – the Garden of the Gods! Visiting here is a journey into a world of towering sandstone formations, dramatic rock spires, and breathtaking natural beauty. We will have a trained Colorado naturalist come onboard the motorcoach with us to give a tour offering opportunities to marvel at rock formations with names like Balanced Rock, Cathedral Spires, and Kissing Camels. The Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center offers exhibits, interactive displays, and educational programs for you to learn more about the park’s geology, ecology, and conservation efforts as well.
Today has provided us with an unforgettable experience in some of Colorado’s most iconic landmarks, with memories we are sure you will treasure. We will check in to the Drury Inn & Suites Colorado Springs for a 2-night stay. While your luggage is being delivered to your room you may begin to partake in the included Kickback Reception offering Drury’s famous selection of hot and cold foods and beverages for your evening meal. If you would prefer a bit more for dinner there are several restaurants either adjacent to or across the street from the hotel.

Day 8

We start by driving to Manitou Springs, Colorado for the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway offering a unique experience as we journey into the heart of the Rocky Mountains. We board the historic railway taking us on a scenic ascent to the summit of Pikes Peak, one of the most iconic peaks in the United States. As the train climbs steadily up the mountain, we are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including lush forests (that hopefully contain some “Aspen Gold”) and rugged peaks. Along the way, the conductor will provide commentary about the history, geology, and wildlife of the area enhancing our journey with fascinating insights. Once we reach the summit of Pikes Peak, we will disembark and have time to explore the breathtaking views from the comfort of the visitor center, or perhaps a bit of time to take a small hike on one of the trails to take in the scenery firsthand. We promise that this adventure, once more in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, is one you will always remember! As the train returns us back to the station we departed from you will have time in the Manitou Village to have lunch on your own before we board the motorcoach for our next destination.
We arrive at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings for a self-guided tour to explore the ancient homes of the Ancestral Puebloans. As you wander through the site at your own pace, you’ll encounter intricately constructed stone walls, rooms, and kivas nestled into the natural sandstone cliffs. Being self-guided this will offer you the freedom to linger and explore at your leisure, taking in the stunning views and pondering the mysteries of this ancient civilization.
We will be leaving the Dwellings and heading back to our hotel so that you will have a bit of time to freshen up and rejuvenate before this evening’s special dinner event.
As this will be our last night in colorful Colorado, we wanted to end it at the Flying W Ranch with a Chuckwagon Supper! One more breakfast at the hotel before making our way back home today. On our way this morning we are stopping at a place we learned about at one of our ABA conferences (American Bus Association), Baker’s Candies. Our friend that represents the state of Nebraska, Micheal, shared with us some of the best chocolate meltaways we have ever had – and in so many flavors too! Located in Greenwood, Nebraska, this family-owned candy company has been delighting customers with its confections since 1987. Each piece is carefully crafted using traditional recipes and the finest quality ingredients, ensuring a taste that is second to none. In addition to its famous meltaways, they also offer a selection of other confections, including chocolate-covered nuts, caramels, and seasonal specialties.
