Winterset, IA- The Duke, Bridges, & More

Join us for The Duke, The Bridges & More in Winterset, Iowa

September 30-October 1, 2019

Monday, September 30, 2019

Join us from the available departure location of your choice, meet your friendly on-board host, then sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery as we make our way to Winterset this morning.

We arrive mid-morning and enjoy a freshly baked apple fritter and your choice of coffee or water at the Winterset Welcome Center before starting a great day of touring in Winterset.

Our first adventure of the day is a guided covered bridges tour. Take in 3-4 covered bridges and have time to walk through them. You will learn about the building of the bridges and the filming of the movie "The Bridges of Madison County," as well as the general history of Winterset. Madison County is the Covered Bridge Capital of Iowa, with the largest group of covered bridges that exists in one area in the western half of the Mississippi Valley. Be sure to bring your cameras!

After our guided tour, we arrive at St. Paul Lutheran Church to enjoy a home-cooked meal of Ham Balls, Cheesy Potatoes, Green Bean Almondine, Mixed Greens Salad, and Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce.

After lunch, we arrive at the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum. Since the John Wayne Birthplace Society was established in 1982, more than a million visitors have journeyed to historic Madison County to tour the birthplace home. Guests have included President Ronald Reagan, movie legend Maureen O’Hara, Wayne’s widow and all of his children, plus fans from 50 states and 40 foreign countries. You will have the opportunity to see the largest diversified exhibit of John Wayne artifacts in existence, including original movie posters, film wardrobe, scripts, contracts, artwork, and even one of his last customized automobiles.

Then, have time to explore the Winterset Historic Courthouse Square. The square has over 20 retail/gift shops, including Quilt Sampler’s Top Shops and a Ben Franklin. Enjoy an optional tour of the Iowa Quilt Museum, on your own. Admission is only $6 per person.

Later, we arrive at Pammel Park Coffee Company. Pammel Park Coffee offers fresh roasted, small batch craft coffee. You will learn about the coffee roasting process while sampling custom roasts. You can also buy some coffee beans, if you would like.

We depart Winterset for the Drury Inn & Suites in West Des Moines for our overnight stay. Once we arrive, have some time to refresh before we depart to enjoy dinner at Iowa Machine Shed. The Iowa Machine Shed is a café decorated with farm tools. Their first location was opened in 1978 on the outskirts of Davenport, IA. They opened with a powerful commitment "Dedicated to the American Farmer." Which meant, they worked hard to have a restaurant that wasn’t just ‘farm themed’ but something that farmers could be proud of. You will enjoy Country Fried Chicken, Old Fashioned Pot Roast, Cole Slaw, Cottage Cheese, Potato, Vegetable, Fresh Baked Breads, and fresh Peach Cobbler. You will NOT walk away hungry from this meal!

Enjoy an included breakfast at the hotel this morning before we set out for Howell’s to enjoy a tour of how they dry their flowers. Howell’s Dried Florals & Greenhouse features naturally air-dried floral arrangements, Erin’s Roses Gift Shop, garden tours of 15 acres of flowers, 53 different flower types, pods and grains, and a pick-your-own pumpkin patch.

Howell’s grows 2 acres of flowers, foliage and ornamental grains for drying and preserving. Farm guests love to stroll through their brilliantly hued fields planted with more than 25 varieties of plants and are amazed to see their drying loft where the dried plant bunches are stored in 20 foot vertical cascades.

We stop for an included lunch at Pizza Ranch before we arrive in downtown Pella to enjoy shopping around the square. Pella is known as "America’s Dutch Treasure" and you will definitely enjoy great shopping in its charming boutiques, stores, bakeries and meat markets on the square. Enjoy a Dutch Letter from the Vander Ploeg Bakery once we board the coach and head for home this afternoon.
