Day 2: Friday, July 27, 2021
Enjoy a full hot breakfast at the hotel this morning before meeting our local tour guide and departing for a day of exploring. Our first stop this morning is Elvis Presley’s Graceland.
You’ve heard the music, now see the place Elvis called home. Explore the beautiful mansion, walk the gardens where he found peace, tour the aircraft that he traveled on from show to show, and encounter Elvis Presley’s Memphis Entertainment Complex for an unforgettable experience featuring legendary costumes, artifacts, and personal mementos from Elvis and his family.
Begin with a brand-new orientation film before setting out with the audio guided Mansion tour. See the “Jungle Room” and explore the many exhibits showcasing Elvis’ career, his automobiles, wardrobe, his many gold records and much more from the Graceland Archives!
Enjoy having full access to the all-new Elvis Presley’s Memphis Entertainment Complex which includes a self-guided tour of Presley Motors Automobile Museum, The Entertainer Career Museum and the Elvis Presley Discovery Exhibits.
Take time for lunch, on your own, at one of the many lunch options at the Graceland Complex including Vernon’s Smokehouse, Gladys’ Diner, Rock N’ Go and Minnie Mae’s Sweets. After lunch, we’ll depart for a Sun Studio Tour.
Sun Studio is known around the world as “The Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” It is the discovery location of musical legends and genres of the 50’s from B.B. King and Elvis Presley, to Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis; from Blues and Gospel, to Country and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Today, their goal is to spread the story of Memphis’ history and culture through the music that put Memphis on the map.
Stand in the very same spot that Elvis first recorded. Your tour guide will tell you the inside stories of B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf and Ike Turner before Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis & Roy Orbison were all drawn to the new Sun Sound. See the priceless memorabilia from the musical legends that blended blues and country music to explode in the “big bang” of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Hear the voices of musicians that still haunt this studio, as you listen to outtakes from recording sessions and feel the energy of the music created here.
Arrive back at the hotel to refresh before departing for dinner at Blues City Café this evening. Have dinner tonight on the famed Beale Street’s Blues City Café where they promise to “Put some South in your mouth!” Described by Bon Appetit Magazine as “Blues and barbeque, smoke and sauce. In Memphis, they all meld beautifully. Just like heaven.”
Blues City Café also offers nightly live entertainment in the Band Box, located right next door. Roll on through the evening at a real Beale Street Juke Joint, where the Chittlin Circuit begins and everybody’s night on Beale Street ends!
Day 3: Wednesday, July 28, 2021
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before setting out with our local tour guide for a Memphis city tour this morning.
This 3-hour tour includes the sights and sounds of Memphis, the “Gateway to the Old South,” one of the most beautiful cities in the Southern United States. Learn why Memphis is the “Home of the Blues” and the “birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll!” Filled with Southern charm, beautifully restored mansions, sculptured tree-lined parkways on a setting high on the Fourth Chickasaw Bluff, this river city boasts of glowing sunsets over the Mississippi, the world’s finest BBQ restaurants and the “Red, Hot and Blue” sounds of the Beale Street Historic Entertainment District.
The tour will also include the March of the Peabody Ducks, where every day at 11 a.m., they are led by the Duckmaster down the elevator to the Italian travertine marble fountain in the Peabody’s Grand Lobby. A red carpet is unrolled and the ducks march through crowds of admiring spectators to the tune of John Philip Sousa’s King Cotton March. In 1940, Bellman Edward Pembroke, a former circus animal trainer, offered to help with delivering the ducks to the fountain each day and taught them the now-famous Peabody Duck March.
Our tour also includes a visit to the Bass Pro Pyramid. It’s a new national destination experience located inside the massive iconic Pyramid in Downtown Memphis. This new, immersive retail experience offers something for everyone from the serious outdoor enthusiast to families looking to have fun. Inside the expansive 535,000-square-foot pyramid are many experiences and features that offer something for everyone!
Enjoy lunch, on your own, on Beale Street downtown before we depart for the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
Start your museum tour with a short introductory video in the true birthplace of soul music – a modest country church. Just as Stax’s music found its roots in the sounds of Southern gospel music, the museum opens in a real, circa 1906 Mississippi Delta church that has been carefully reassembled inside of the building.
While most museums don’t encourage dancing in the aisles, here they invite you to shake what your mama gave you on the Express Yourself dance floor. Don’t worry if you don’t have the moves – you can pick up inspiration from the dancers on vintage episodes of Soul Train playing next to the dance floor!
Check out period recording equipment in the control room, then stand in Studio A, an exact replica of the legendary converted movie theater where Stax artists cut records, down to the gently slanted floor that contributed to Stax’s special sound. See Stax’s impact in the hall of records, where the walls are lined with floor-to-ceiling cases containing all the albums and singles released by Stax and its subsidiary labels from 1957 – 1975. See the album art and hear the classics (or find new favorites) at the listening station.
Arrive back at the hotel this evening with time to freshen up before hitting Elvis Presley Blvd. for dinner at a Memphis tradition tonight – Marlowe’s Ribs & Restaurant. Marlowe’s is home to world-championship BBQ and Memphis Dry Rub Ribs to mention just a few of the tasty entrees. It is also loaded with Elvis memorabilia. Family-owned and operated for the last 35 years, the restaurant has been featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”
Return to the hotel for the remainder of the evening free, on your own.
Day 4: Thursday, July 29, 2021
Enjoy a full hot breakfast at the hotel this morning before departing for the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum with our local guide. The Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum’s exhibition about the birth of rock and soul music was created by the Smithsonian Institution. It tells the story of musical pioneers who, for the love of music, overcame racial and socio-economic barriers to create the music that shook the entire world.
Take time to have lunch, on your own, in the unique area of Overton Square. It is a funky, vibrant hangout featuring live-performance venues in a revitalized neighborhood destination for food and fun in the heart of downtown.
We’ll then travel to Nesbit, MS to the Lewis Ranch – home of Jerry Lee Lewis. The Lewis Ranch is unlike any other rock ‘n’ roll attraction. It’s an active residence where Jerry Lee Lewis still spends time with his family and friends. Jerry Lee has always seen the Lewis Ranch as his private escape, but now he’s decided to open the doors to fans.
Fully immerse yourself in the life and music of the man who put rock ‘n’ roll on the map. Jerry Lee’s friends have known about this secret getaway for years – now you may visit! The Ranch is where Jerry Lee has lived most of his life. For more than 40 years, he has used it as his escape where he can jam with friends, compose new songs and spend time with his loved ones.
Walk through his halls to see where he raised his family and played his piano night and day. Jerry Lee Lewis is Rock ‘n’ Roll’s “first great wild man” and has a storied reputation. But the real story of the Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll runs much deeper – a man who is both rowdy and religious, famous and humble, who came from simple roots and worked hard to make it in music. At the Lewis Ranch, you will visit behind his public image, which will give you an intimate look at his early life, his climb to success, and the way he lives today.
We arrive back at the hotel this evening with time to refresh before enjoying one last dinner in Memphis at Central BBQ. Memphians know great BBQ and will not settle for anything less. This restaurant has been ranked in the top three BBQ restaurants in all of Memphis since 2003 and has taken the top honors 10 times! The remainder of the evening is yours, free to enjoy as you wish, on your own.
Day 5: Friday, July 30, 2021
Enjoy your final breakfast in Memphis at the hotel this morning before getting settled into the motorcoach for the return trip home today. There will be rest and refresh breaks along the way, as needed, as well as a stop for lunch, on your own. Arrive back home this evening with wonderful memories made while walking in Memphis!
