On arrival in Denver this evening, you will spend the night at the new Hyatt Place hotel featuring Hyatt Luxury over-sized rooms with a separate sitting area, indoor pool, breakfast bar, cocktail bar, marketplace for evening snacks and a free courtesy shuttle to a multitude of local restaurants where you can enjoy dinner this evening, on your own.

Day 3

Day 3: Wednesday, August 24, 2022
After breakfast today, head to Georgetown. At 8,500 feet she was once known as the ‘Silver Queen of Colorado’. It’s here that you’ll enjoy your first train ride of the tour, on the Georgetown Scenic Railroad, on an old-time steam locomotive chugging its way up the canyon, hauling your train past the remains of several gold and silver mines. This open car train takes you between Georgetown and Silver Plume, over 2 miles apart, over mountainous terrain, requiring trestles, cuts, fills, loops, and curves totaling 3.1 miles of narrow-gauge track.
Located at the halfway point on the railroad, you’ll also tour the Lebanon Silver Mine, taking you 500 feet into a mine tunnel bored in the 1870s. Your guide will point out rich veins of silver and tell you about early-day mining. The temperature inside the mine is a constant 44 degrees Fahrenheit, so bring a jacket! The tour also includes panning for gold, and you get to keep the gold you find! The tour also includes visits to the manager’s office, the miners’ change room and the tool shed.
Enjoy an included dinner at the Rockslide this evening. From the heart of downtown Grand Junction, the Rockslide Restaurant & Brewery has been the Grand Valley’s premiere micro-brewery for over twenty-five years. The Rockslide was founded in 1994 by three friends who had a hunch that microbrew pubs were going to be the “thing” of the future. Scott Howard, Sean Forey, and Mike Bell were on a business trip in Utah in 1992 and experienced their first microbrew pub. From that very moment the concept of the Rockslide was born, and they were well on their way to their next business venture. The doors opened in November of 1994 and business has been booming ever since. You’ll feel right at home in their eclectic and historic building where they have two patios for you to enjoy al fresco dining, or you can move the party indoors to their comfortable bar or family-friendly dining room. After dinner, check into your Grand Junction hotel for the night.

Day 4

Day 4: Thursday, August 25, 2022
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before departing for a three-hour Jeep Tour over 12,000 foot Corkscrew Pass into the Red Mountains. Corkscrew Gulch is aptly named for its narrow and winding ascent to the summit of Red Mountain Two. Perhaps the most distinctively colored geology in the San Juan Mountains…deep reds, brilliant orange and soft yellows blanket all three of the Red Mountains. The softer sediment on the trail offers a little smoother climb than other 4x4 trails. This increasingly popular, beautiful high mountain trail starts just before the old mining town of Ironton. For the train buff, Corkscrew Gulch also features remnants of the Guston turntable, a once productive turnaround point for the Red Mountain mining district’s railway. This track connected Silverton, Ironton, and Lake City while in operation. Turn north, south, east, or west and enjoy never-ending views of four different mountain ranges, including the distant Imogene Pass! Corkcscrew provides one of the most unforgettable and distinctive vantage points in all the San Juans. A picnic lunch will be included.
The Jeep tour ends in Historic Silverton, where you board train number two, the Silverton-Durango Railroad. This steam locomotive travels along the Animas River winding through spectacular and breathtaking canyons in the remote wilderness of San Juan National Forest. You may feel as though you are reliving history as you travel on the same tracks that miners, cowboys, and settlers of the Old West took over a century ago.
Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. After dinner, we travel to Pagosa Springs, a town in southwest Colorado, known for its hot springs. It’s surrounded by the rugged San Juan Mountains and vast areas of national forest.

Day 5

Day 5: Friday, August 26, 2022
Early this morning you travel to Chama, New Mexico for another train ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. Perhaps the most beautiful ride in America, you’ll wind along steep mountain canyons, high deserts, lush meadows, over trestles, and through tunnels. The Cumbres & Toltec is a National Historic Landmark that moves – a completely authentic steam railroad that has steamed through history and across the Rocky Mountains since 1880. A stop will be made for lunch at the lonely Osier Dining Hall, near the halfway point of your ride today.
This evening you’ll check into your Alamosa, Colorado hotel for an overnight stay. Dinner will be included at a local restaurant.

Day 6

Day 6: Saturday, August 27, 2022
Fill up on a great breakfast at the hotel this morning and get ready for your next rail adventure! Today, ride the Royal Gorge Train for a scenic journey through the spectacular Royal Gorge. Since 1879, these tracks have followed the winding, tumbling Arkansas River deep within the soaring, 1000-foot granite cliffs of Colorado’s Royal Gorge. The Royal Gorge Route is a quality, Colorado attraction – no thrill rides or cotton candy – just rugged scenery. The Royal Gorge remains a special place and should be preserved much like any one of our National Parks. The Route believes that riding the rails through the Royal Gorge and spotting Big Horn Sheep, Blue Heron, Bald Eagles, and enjoying the bumbling Arkansas River with your family or special someone is a unique experience. The train provides the means to unwind, enjoy time together and mother nature up close.
A delicious lunch will be included while onboard today. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad pride themselves on exceptional guest service and purchase only the highest quality food items available.
This afternoon, explore Colorado Springs’ paradise – the Garden of the Gods – in one magical stop. Garden of the Gods Park is a registered National Natural Landmark. Imagine dramatic views, 300-foot towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and brilliant blue skies. This world-class Visitor & Nature Center and museum is the most visited attraction in the region. Learn how the amazing red rocks got there with the Geo-Trekker theater experience and learn about Native-American culture.
This evening, check into the Hotel Elegante, in Colorado Springs, for a two-night stay. This full-service resort features Starbucks In-Room Coffee, Bath & Body Works Amenities, Room Service, a Sports Center, and a full hot breakfast buffet each morning.

Day 7

Day 7: Sunday August 28, 2022
Enjoy a full breakfast buffet this morning before departing for the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The Cog has been climbing Pikes Peak since 1891. Recognized as the world’s highest cog railroad, The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railways is an important part of the heritage of the Western United States. Taking this journey is like walking the footsteps of history.
It all started with a mule. It was the late 1880s when a tourist named Zalmon Simmons, inventor and founder of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company, visited the Pikes Peak Region. Wanting to check up on one of his inventions, an insulator for the telegraph wires that ran to the Army Signal Station on the Summit, he reached the top of Pikes Peak the only way back in those days: an arduous, two-day trip on a mule.
Mr. Simmons was in awe of the scenery but determined that the views should be experienced in a more civilized and comfortable manner, and aren’t we all grateful for that? Word has it he was relaxing in one of the Manitou Springs’ mineral baths after his return, when the owner of his hotel mentioned the idea of a railway to the top, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The views from the top are emotionally moving and inspired “America the Beautiful”, written by Katharine Lee Bates, whose experience in 1893 on top of Pikes Peak moved her to pen the poem that became one of the most patriotic songs honoring America. The rail takes you to the top of Pikes Peak, America’s Mountain, but the journey is so much more than that…it’s a lifetime experience.
You’ll have time for a self-guided tour of the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, located at the foot of Pikes Peak. These mountain dwellings are a rare historical treasure. Most attractions with artifacts and structures that are more than 700 years old would never allow visitors to look, explore and touch – but the Mantiou Cliff Dwellings has bucked such restrictions from day one.
Step into a piece of history as you wander through painstakingly preserved AnasazI structures relocated from McElmo Canyon in southern Colorado in the early 1900s. As you walk through 40 unique rooms, you’ll get a picture of what life was like for the indigenous peoples of the region – how they lived, what they ate, where they slept and what they did for fun.
Dinner this evening will be the Flying W Ranch. Enjoy a real Chuckwagon Dinner and be entertained by the Flying W Wranglers. The Wranglers specialize in beautiful 3-part vocal harmonies about the romantic American Cowboy.

Day 8

Day 8: Monday, August 29, 2022
Enjoy one last breakfast in Colorado this morning before we depart for our journey home. Enjoy rest and refresh breaks along the way today, as needed, as well as a stop for lunch, on your own. After a long day of travel, arrive in Kearney, Nebraska for your overnight stay this evening in time to enjoy dinner, on your own, at a nearby restaurant.

Day 9

Day 9: Tuesday, August 30, 2022
Enjoy your last breakfast with fellow travelers this morning before we board the motorcoach and start our last leg of travel and head for home. You’ll arrive home today with such wonderful memories made riding the rails of Colorado and New Mexico!
